Screen Recorder for Chromebook

Record your Chromebook’s screen with sound in a Chrome tab. No extension, no Linux apps and no account, and it keeps working offline.

Recorded and saved on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

How to record your screen on a Chromebook

STEP 1

Open the recorder in Chrome

Mic and system audio are already on. Allow the microphone when Chrome asks, and the level meter starts moving.

STEP 2

Share the entire screen with audio

Pick Entire screen and turn on system audio to record everything you hear, or choose a tab to record just that tab and its sound.

STEP 3

Stop and save

Trim the ends, then save the MP4. The “Save as” dialog lets you pick Downloads or any other folder in the Files app.

ChromeOS’s screen capture tool or this recorder?

Every Chromebook has a built-in screen capture tool. Open it from Quick Settings, or press Ctrl + Shift + Show windows, and you can record the full screen, one window or an area you drag out. For a quick clip it’s hard to beat, and it’s worth trying first. Its options change with ChromeOS updates, so check what your version includes.

This recorder is for when you want more control over the result:

  • A webcam bubble in a corner, for lessons and walkthroughs where seeing your face helps.
  • Your microphone and the Chromebook’s sound mixed, with a separate volume for each.
  • Pause and resume, a 3-second countdown and a live file-size readout.
  • Cutting out mistakes and pauses before you save, MP4 output, conversion to WebM and GIF export of up to 30 seconds.
  • Recovery of the recording if Chrome crashes or the tab reloads.

Recording on a small drive

Many Chromebooks have modest storage, and video is written to it as you record. The recorder shows free space before you start and the file size as you go, so you can see trouble coming instead of finding out at the end.

If space is tight, the default of 1080p at 30 fps is sensible, and 720p is plenty for a tutorial with large text. 60 fps and 4K make much bigger files and ask more of a low-powered processor. Move finished videos to Google Drive or a USB stick afterwards if you need the room back.

Two settings help as well. Under More options, the recording can stop by itself at a file size you pick, from 500 MB up, so a forgotten recording can’t fill the drive. After you stop, “Make it smaller” can scale a video down to 720p or 480p before you keep or move it.

Once you’ve opened the page, it also works offline, which helps on a train or a patchy school connection.

School and work Chromebooks

On a managed Chromebook, your administrator decides what Chrome is allowed to do. If screen sharing, the camera or the microphone has been turned off by policy, no website can switch it back on, this one included. You’ll see the permission refused; ask your IT team if you need it.

Because nothing is uploaded and there’s no account, students can record an assignment without creating a login or sending video to an outside service. The file stays on the Chromebook until they choose to hand it in.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Chromebook record internal audio?

Yes. In Chrome, share the entire screen and turn on system audio to record everything the Chromebook plays, or share a tab to record only that tab’s sound.

Do I need to install an extension?

No. It’s a web page. There’s nothing to add to Chrome and nothing to approve beyond the usual screen, camera and microphone prompts.

Where are my recordings saved?

In the folder you pick in the “Save as” dialog. You’ll find the file in the Files app, usually under Downloads unless you chose somewhere else.

Can I record my webcam on a Chromebook?

Yes. Choose Screen + Camera for a bubble over your screen, or Camera only to record just yourself.

Does it work without internet?

After your first visit, yes. The page is kept on the Chromebook, so you can open it and record with no connection.

How long can I record?

Until the drive fills up. There’s no time limit, so check the free-space figure before a long session and watch the file size as you go.

Will recording slow down my Chromebook?

It takes some processing power, more at higher settings. On an entry-level model, start at 1080p and 30 fps with other tabs closed, and drop to 720p if the video stutters.

Can I control the recording from another app?

Yes. In Chrome, a small floating window with stop, pause, mute and the timer stays on top of whatever you’re working in.
