Free Online Screen Recorder

Record your screen with audio and webcam, right in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, there’s no account to create and no watermark on the video.

Recorded and saved on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

How to record your screen

STEP 1

Choose what to record

Pick Screen, Screen + Camera, Camera only or Audio only, then decide whether to include your microphone and your computer’s sound. Quality starts at 1080p.

STEP 2

Pick a screen, window or tab

Press Start and your browser asks what to share. Choose a tab or the entire screen if you want your computer’s sound, then wait out the 3-second countdown or skip it.

STEP 3

Stop, tidy up and save

Press Stop, cut out any mistakes or pauses, and save the video as MP4 or WebM. You can also make it smaller for email or export a short clip as a GIF.

FEATURES

Everything a screen recorder should do

Microphone and computer sound

Mix your voice with system or tab audio, each with its own volume slider and live level meter. Mute the mic mid-recording without stopping.

Webcam bubble

Add yourself in a circle or rounded rectangle, in any corner, at one of three sizes. The camera image is mirrored, the way most people expect to see themselves.

Up to 4K at 60 fps

Choose 720p, 1080p, 1440p or 4K at 30 or 60 frames per second. The recorder never goes beyond the real resolution of the screen you capture.

Record just part of the screen

Turn on “Choose an area after sharing”, then draw a box over the live screen, free-form or in a 16:9, 1:1 or 9:16 shape. Only that area is recorded.

Countdown, pause and floating controls

A skippable 3-second countdown gives you time to get ready, and you can pause whenever you need a break. In Chrome and Edge, a small window with the controls and the timer stays on top of your other apps.

Markers, screenshots and auto-stop

Flag a moment to find it again in the editor, or save a PNG of the screen without stopping. You can also have the recording stop by itself after a number of minutes or at a file size.

Crash-safe recording

Your recording is written to private storage on your device every second. If the browser crashes or the page reloads, you’re offered the footage back.

Cut out mistakes and pauses

Cut sections out of the middle, keep only the part you select, or let “Remove pauses” find silences of about 1.2 seconds or longer. Undo steps back, and the original isn’t changed.

Make it smaller

Shrink a recording to fit under 25 MB or 10 MB for email and chat, scale it to 720p or 480p, or type your own size in MB.

Backgrounds and zoom

Place the video on a gradient or solid background with padding, rounded corners and a shadow, at 16:9, 1:1, 9:16 or 4:5 for social media. Zoom into an area at the moments you choose.

MP4, WebM and GIF

Switch between MP4 and WebM in browsers that support WebCodecs video encoding, or turn up to 30 seconds into a GIF up to 960 px wide at 10–15 fps.

Share without uploading

Where your system supports it, Share… hands the file straight to Mail, Messages, AirDrop and similar apps. There’s no account, and after your first visit the recorder works offline.

PRIVACY

How it works, and why it’s private

The recorder uses the screen-capture, camera and microphone features built into your browser. When you press Start, the browser itself asks what you want to share, and nothing is captured until you choose. The video is encoded on your computer as you record.

The footage is never sent anywhere. There’s no server that receives it, so there’s nothing to upload, wait for or delete later. While you record, the file is written every second to the browser’s private on-device storage, which is what lets the page recover a recording after a crash. When you save, the finished file lands on your computer like any other download. When you use Share…, your system passes the file directly to the app you pick, with no server in between.

You don’t have to take this on trust. Open your browser’s developer tools and watch the Network tab while you record: no video leaves the page. Or load the page once, switch off Wi-Fi and record anyway. After the first visit it works offline.

AUDIO

Record system audio on Windows, Mac and Chromebook

Your microphone works in every desktop browser. Capturing the sound your computer plays is where browsers and operating systems differ, and it also depends on what you choose to share.

  • Windows, in Chrome or Edge: share the entire screen and tick “Also share system audio” to record everything you hear. Sharing a tab records that tab’s sound. Sharing a single window records no audio.
  • Chromebook, in Chrome: share a tab for its audio, or the entire screen for system audio.
  • Mac, in Chrome or Edge: share a tab to record its sound. Recent Chrome versions on recent macOS can also share system audio with the entire screen; if the checkbox doesn’t appear, share a tab instead. macOS also needs Screen Recording turned on for the browser in System Settings › Privacy & Security, followed by a browser restart.
  • Safari and Firefox: screen and window recording with your microphone works, but neither browser can capture system or tab audio.
  • Linux: Chrome can share tab audio. Whether system audio is available depends on your desktop and browser version.

USE CASES

What can you record?

Anything you can see on screen or hear from your computer, within the audio limits above. Some common uses:

  • Tutorials and walkthroughs: show how to use an app, with your voice and, if you like, your face in a corner.
  • Bug reports: capture the exact steps that break something, press Alt + Shift + S for a screenshot of the error, then cut the clip down or save a short GIF for the ticket.
  • Presentations: talk through your slides once so people can watch when it suits them.
  • Design and code feedback: walk through a mockup, a pull request or a document instead of writing a long message.
  • Short clips for social media: record just the area that matters, then save it at 9:16, 1:1 or 4:5 on a background, zooming in where the detail is small.
  • Online meetings: record a call running in a browser tab, including the other participants’ audio. Tell everyone and get their consent first. In many places recording a conversation without it is against the law.

EDITING

Tidy up before you share

When you press Stop, the recording opens with a preview. Open Edit to change it before you save. Cuts, style, zoom and size are rendered together into one new copy, so the video is re-encoded only once, and the original recording isn’t changed. All of it happens on your computer.

  • Cut: select a section on the timeline and cut it out, or keep only the selection and drop everything around it. Each cut is listed so you can take it back, and Undo reverses your last change.
  • Remove pauses: the editor looks through the sound for silences of about 1.2 seconds or longer and adds each one as a cut you can check.
  • Markers: moments you flagged while recording show on the timeline, so you can jump to the part you meant to fix.
  • Make it smaller: fit the file under 25 MB or 10 MB, scale it to 720p or 480p, or type a size in MB. Size targets are a best effort; very busy footage, such as fast scrolling or video, can land slightly above a small target.
  • Style: a gradient or solid background, padding, rounded corners and a shadow, at 16:9, 1:1, 9:16 or 4:5 for social media.
  • Zoom: pick an area and the moments to zoom in on it. The view moves in and out smoothly.
  • Share…: where your system supports it, the file goes straight to Mail, Messages, AirDrop and similar apps. Many desktop browsers don’t offer sharing; Save always works.

COMPATIBILITY

Browser support

The recorder works in current desktop Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox. Chrome and Edge get every feature.

Phones and tablets are different. iPhone, iPad and Android browsers give web pages no way to capture the screen, so there the recorder offers Camera only and Audio only, and points you to the phone’s own recorder: Control Center on iOS, Quick Settings on Android.

FORMATS

MP4 or WebM?

MP4, with H.264 video and AAC audio, is the safe choice. It plays on Windows, macOS, iPhone and Android, and opens in almost every video editor and slide app. Current Chrome, Edge and Safari record MP4 directly, so there’s no conversion step.

Firefox records WebM, with VP9 or VP8 video and Opus audio. WebM plays in every modern browser, but some desktop players and editors are fussier about it. If your browser supports WebCodecs video encoding, one click converts WebM to MP4, or MP4 to WebM, on your own computer.

Audio-only recordings save as M4A (AAC) or WebM (Opus). Files are named with the date and time, such as screen-recording-2026-09-28-14-05.mp4. Chrome and Edge let you choose the folder in a “Save as” dialog; other browsers put the file in your downloads.

SHORTCUTS

Keyboard shortcuts

These work while the recorder page is in focus. When you’re in another app, use the floating mini controls in Chrome and Edge, which have buttons for all of these, including a flag for markers and a camera for screenshots. You can also glance at the browser tab, whose title reads “● REC 02:14” while you record.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free, with no watermark?

Yes. It’s free to use, there’s no account to create, and nothing is stamped on your video. What you record is exactly what you save.

Is there a time limit?

No. A recording can run for as long as you have free disk space, and the recorder shows how much is available before you start.

Where is my video saved?

On your computer. While you record, it’s kept in your browser’s private storage on this device. When you save, it goes to your downloads folder, or to a folder you pick in Chrome and Edge. It’s never uploaded.

Can I record my screen with sound?

Yes. Your microphone works in every desktop browser. Computer sound works in Chrome and Edge: share a tab for that tab’s audio, or on Windows and ChromeOS share the entire screen and tick the system-audio box. Safari and Firefox can’t capture computer sound.

Why is there no system audio on my Mac?

Safari and Firefox can’t capture it at all. In Chrome or Edge, share a tab and its sound is recorded. Recent Chrome versions on recent macOS can also share system audio with the entire screen; if the checkbox doesn’t appear, a tab is the reliable option.

Does it work on iPhone or Android?

Not for screen recording, because mobile browsers don’t let web pages capture the screen. You can still use Camera only or Audio only. For the screen, use the built-in recorder in Control Center on iOS or Quick Settings on Android.

Should I save as MP4 or WebM?

Choose MP4 if you’re not sure, since it plays almost everywhere. Chrome, Edge and Safari record it directly. Firefox records WebM, which you can convert to MP4 in one click if your browser supports WebCodecs video encoding.

How do I record just one browser tab?

Press Start, choose the tab option in your browser’s share dialog and pick the tab. Only that tab is recorded, with its sound in Chrome and Edge. In those browsers you can also switch to a different tab mid-recording without stopping.

Can I record just part of my screen?

Yes. In Screen or Screen + Camera, turn on “Choose an area after sharing”. After you pick a screen, window or tab, drag a box over the live picture, free-form or in a 16:9, 1:1 or 9:16 shape, and press “Record this area”. Only that part is recorded, and the box is remembered for next time.

Can I cut out mistakes or pauses?

Yes. After you stop, open Edit. Select a section on the timeline and cut it out, or keep only the selection. “Remove pauses” finds silences of about 1.2 seconds or longer in the sound and adds each one as a cut you can check or take back. Saving makes an edited copy and leaves the original as it was.

How do I make a recording smaller to email it?

After you stop, choose “Make it smaller” and pick under 25 MB or 10 MB, 720p, 480p, or your own size in MB. The video is re-encoded on your computer. Size targets are a best effort, so very busy footage can end up slightly above a small target. Where your system supports it, Share… then hands the file straight to your mail app.

What happens if my browser crashes?

The recording is saved to your device every second as you go. Open the recorder again and it offers to recover the footage.

Can I record my webcam at the same time?

Yes. Choose Screen + Camera to add a webcam bubble: a circle or rounded rectangle in any of the four corners, in three sizes. Camera only records just the webcam.
